I actually have some sympathy for Mourinho's general argument re Guardiola and City. He has absolitely zero chance of taking them on, City have killed everyone with their investment. They have better everything right now - every single aspect of that football club has had more investment than at any other club. Their squad is more valuable than United and ours added together.

Don't get me wrong I have no sympathy for a scum club like United - they've had their two decades of complete financial domination over every other team in England - but, it's illogical for people to label Mourinho as a failure because he's not going toe-to-toe with them. No one anywhere could do it.

I thought mourinho brought up city as a diversionary topic when manu fans' main complaints were the dour nature of their football over the past couple of years against all teams.
That said, i have no sympathy for these talking heads who chat mostly shit for the reason wenger gave recently.

People are not mocking Mourinho because he doesn’t have valid point about City, it’s because he’s a manager who’s made his career on massively outspending his rivals and he’s not exactly far behind City this time either. He fielded a team the other night that cost just short of £400m. To suggest he and United don’t have the means to fight City is just plain wrong.

Yeah, true. Mourinho isn't wrong but I like that something like this must cause United fans some serious angst.

That's not true. Mourinho alone spent almost 300m and City squad is about 363m.

I'm not talking about what they've spent, I'm talking about what they'd be worth if you were to put them up for sale. It's not Mourinho's fault that United have only been able to buy mostly dross, just as it's not Guardiola being some sort of genius that means City have the ambition, money and personnel to secure the more sought after players.

Of course it's Mourinho's fault that he spends his club's money on utter dross. I'm pretty sure nobody forced him to buy Lukaku and there are tons of better players around to spend 85m on

You don't think he tried all summer to sign Morata? You think he wants to play Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at centrehalf? Or buy young nobodies like Lindleloff and Bailly? Of course there's more to signing players than who the manager is and what he chooses. Lukaku, even with a set spell after moving to a bigger club, has only scored about 10 less League goals this calendar year than everybody's golden boy Harry Kane, he's no fool and will get circa 25 League goals this season. Not my cup of tea but still.

I'm not interested in defending Mourinho - he's won in the past because he's a good manager and he has the best players, he's no genius or particularly amazing coach. And, oh look, he doesn't have the best players and he's nowhere near. It's just Guardiola is no different and if you swapped their squads, Mourinho would be sitting pretty at the top of the League and Guardiola miles away making bitter comments about not having as good a team.

Mourinho signed Pogba and broke the wold transfer record by doing so without even blinking. He could probably get any sort of player he wants. United are better positioned than City to capitalise on the new wage bill limits too since their turnover is so massive. For all intents and purposes they're the richest club in football. If Guardiola had helmed them right now they'd be winning the league, no doubt about it.

People make so much of a manager. Guardiola has a team assembled around him that has been working on making City the biggest club in the world for years now. United are dicking around with idiots like Ed Woodward and taking their position for granted.

Buying Pogba is just another example of a lazy statement signing that actually improved or addressed very little. I can't imagine Mourinho rating a big, lazy good for nothing like Pogba much at all. City meanwhile are throwing everything at building a super squad. No resting on their laurels as United are doing.

Quite the opposite, both he and Chelsea viewed Morata as second choice.

You're giving Mourinho too much credit, this is the same guy who sold guys like Salah and De Bruyne without blinking. His a pretty terrible assessor of talent, which is why in a world where he doesn't have a monopoly of the best talent he has no clue which way to turn. There's no way he'd ever be interested in the likes of Gundogan.

Also, City's signings are not exactly the global elite. It's Kyle Fucking Walker and some kid from Portugal most people have never heard of that is clearly bought with Pep's ideas in mind. Bernardo Silva isn't much to write home about either but he fits their style of play.

I think you're selling Pogba short, Ricky. The bloke's a bona fide top class talent, as good as they get, and while he hasn't been as good at United as he was at Juve he's generally been one of their best players. Ask any given United fan and they'll tell you the same thing. There's a prejudice against him in England on pair with the prejudice against Özil; that's not to say they're on the same level as players but it's easy enough to recognise the pattern. I think Mourinho looked at him and saw an opportunity to get what looked odds on to be one of the best players of his generation, and he moved to secure him.

Yeah, last summer they signed a couple of fullbacks, a goalkeeper no one really rated, and Silva. The biggest difference between last season and now is that they've kept working to get everyone in line with Guardiola's style of play. I get what Ricky's saying about people being obsessed with managers, but if we had one who worked like Guardiola does we wouldn't be sitting 6th in Premier League right now, without either style or substance to the football we produce. He has reshaped their identity as a team. This is what Mourinho seems incapable of doing at United.
