Anyone ever saying refs need protection because of how difficult their job is deserves a swift kick in the balls
Goes both ways, doesn't it? Would Clattenberg be that worried over accusations of 'losing Spurs the title' if referees had a better overall protection and standing? It's not like we're lacking examples of referees who paid dearly for making big calls. Urs Meier was hounded into retirement by England fans in -04, Anders Frisk retired after the Chelsea fans threatened the lives of his children a few years later. I have no love for Clattenburg, but it is what it is. If you put isolated individuals in the crosshairs with huge potential influence over the result, give them zero gratitude no matter who wins or loses, and deny them modern tools to guide split-second decisions, then this is pretty much what you get.
The thing about "zero gratitude" is the exact point. From the sounds of that podcast Clattenburg thinks he's the best ref in the world (not even exaggerating, he says it pretty explicitly) and he obviously doesn't fear retribution from the PGMO. It's not isolated individuals who make that decision, it's the two relevant governing bodies who make every decision sacrosanct regardless of how wrong it is.
Sure, Clattenburg is just a symptom and not the disease but hearing the cunt delight in his horrorshow shows me at least that they're not victims but deliberate co-culprits in this farce
