Segway Saw them around a month ago in Copenhagen. Just incredible live experience. Can't believe the man is 67.

It's crazy, isn't it? My first Bad Seeds show was 2008 at the Troxy in London. It's a small, very beautiful art deco theatre. He was brilliant and we left, having not known a lot of his stuff previously, resolved to dig into the back catalogue.

Now he's made the jump to arena shows, somehow the Bad Seeds have been able to power up the intensity (they were already intense) but retain their intricacy. And Nick's humanity and humour as a front man makes a big arena feel very intimate. How he's able to perform as he does at 67 is really unbelievable - I can only imagine what his Birthday Party shows must have been like!

Jubilee St last night may be the greatest live performance I've ever witnessed of a song, but a phat sounding White Elephant and Conversion weren't too far behind. Red Right Hand got two endings, he finished the gig with a solo piano rendition of Into My Arms and you could hear a pin drop. Just incredible.

RocktheCasbah Can easily imagine them being great in smaller venues. Cave does a great job making the big venues feel smaller and intimate. The ones in the front row get their money's worth of him at least 😆

Jubilee Street was the highlight for me as well. Incredible song made even better live. Hell of a climax by the end!

Bright Horses was another higlight for me. Warren Ellis is a musical beast too.

RocktheCasbah it was fun. They left the big singalong songs for the end rather than interspersed throughout which meant I didn't know a chunk of the main set. Something So Strong was last in the main set the entire was Weather With You, Don't Dream It's Over and Better Be Home Soon. Those were all like anthems growing up in NZ so pretty cool to see live.

And is there a bigger jobsworth than the guy who watches the crowd just so he can tell people off for taking a photo or whatever on their phone? Just fuck off and let people enjoy it. 😆

That's one of the things I love so much about them. We were late to the gig in Brighton as we were drinking with a mate if mine and walked in as the gig had just started - and they started with Weather With You. Don't Dream It's Over, iirc closed out the main set. I've seen them toss it out there much earlier too. I think you get a genuinely distinct experience every night.

It's funny though, I came away from last night thinking that Nick had blown the roof off the O2 - I enjoyed Crowded House, but they weren't even close to that. Though I suppose it would be unfair to expect that level of intensity to what is generally a good times, good vibes band.

RocktheCasbah yeah it was definitely a different setlist to what I've looked up from the recent shows. And there was a request from the crowd they did too. The last part was pretty special having grown up with those anthems and singing them at school etc.

Seen Nick a couple of times with the Bad Seeds, and Warren Ellis with the Dirty Three, and Grinderman over the years.

Personally I'm pretty over the "Nick schtick" but there's no denying he's a mad frontman. I've quite rarely seen a singer do as much insane stuff as he did fronting Grinderman, and he was already pushing 60 at that point. I remember he spent the entirety of "Kitchenette" crowdsurfing and getting people in the crowd to scream "I just wanna relax!" into the mike.

Just to be a bit more main stream I'm off to Coldplay tomorrow night. Seen them 3 times before, but not since 2016. They skipped us on the last tour. Continuing the Crowded House theme, at the 2016 show Chris Martin started singing Four Seasons In One Day then stopped and said “I don’t know the words, is there anyone here who can help me?” And Neil Finn appeared on stage to do the song with him. Crowded House have their own show tomorrow night though so no repeat this time.

invisibleman18 Coldplay was amazing last night and worth the 8 year wait since they were last here. Just a spectacular event with the lights and special effects etc. My wife has never really been a fan ("I always used to turn the radio off when they came on") but left saying she can't wait until they come back again. I'm now one of those people who cries in Fix You as it just made me think of my Dad. Also shed a tear at one of the support acts - some of you Aussies might know Emmanuel Kelly from X Factor etc. He sang Imagine which he went viral for with his X Factor audition years ago. We played that at my Dad's funeral and I hadn't seen this guy before so wasn't prepared for it (I haven't yet been able to bring myself to listen to the songs we used since the funeral which was in July).

There was also a proposal 3 seats to my left during the "oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh" part of Viva la Vida. Heard a massive scream and turned around and saw the guy down on his knee.

PJ were great last night. The gig was delayed by about 1.5 hrs due to storms but settled after that. Pixies only played a short opening set but were pretty underwhelming. PJ also had to shorten their set a bit too I think, but still played for about 2hrs straight. Having not seen them since '95, they still know how to put on a show and Mike McGready was absolutely ripping his (many) solos! Great nostalgia as anticipated, with plenty of classics from earlier albums as well as a few off their latest record which all sounded pretty great live. I predicted they would close with 'Rockin' in the free world' and wasn't disappointed.

Considering a show there, but curious how it is as a venue.

This is exactly the kind of corny shit I would expect to happen at a Coldplay gig 😅
Glad you enjoyed it though and no doubt they put on a good show.

Got a challenge for you lot.....

Songs that sound like a different band made them. Maybe you originally thought someone else made it, to only later on learn they didn't. Or, songs that you can listen to but only hear a different band.

This song screams Roy Orbison to me.

I've got others if this takes off, but curious what others think and offer.

MistaT Interesting … I don't hear Orbison there, it's a nice track I didn't know before, though.

By the way, if you ever want to embarrass yourself, just try doing an Orbison song at karaoke. The guy was a supreme singer.

In terms of accurate mimicry (right down to Molly Rankin copying the vocal and lyrical tics of early Morrissey, and the Kevin Smith pitch-bending dude doing the production specifics of Marr's guitar lines on the self-titled album), "Pressed" by Alvvays has to be the leader of the pack of all Smiths imitations in music history.

Daz Romance has been quite hyped, it's true - think I was guilty of it but Skinty Fia is a great record. If it's not you though, it's not you - not much I can say to that.

Qwiss hope he enjoyed it - it's a pig of a venue to get to and also, tonight, to get out of. Only complaint though, cos the rest of the night was superb. Not sure they were quite as good as when we saw them a couple of years ago, albeit in a much smaller venue, but they definitely generate a response from a crowd that a lot of bands playing in London would kill for.
