My only experience of him was through a live record he did with Fela Kuti, but it's an amazing album.

He was an incredible drummer even when riddled with health problems in his later years.

I didn't know it existed up until a year ago. It's not one of his better known recordings but it's the best one I've heard from Fela. Heavy sounds with some serious rhythms.

Nice one MD. RATM are one of my all-time favourites. Gutted to never have seen them live though.
Speaking of live, I saw Elton John this week. I've never been a big fan (ie never bought any of his albums) but he was playing only half hour away from where I live (and we never get big acts here given I'm 3 hours away from Melbourne) so I had to go. Have to say, the guy puts on a mean show. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
And for a complete change of pace, I'll be seeing Tool at the end of the month.
