Absolutely. Back when Radiohead were peaking The Smiths were my favourite band. And they always worked very hard to communicate something emotionally real through their lyrics and music, something I've never really felt from Radiohead.
I find that's the trouble with some avant-garde artists: they look back to the minimalism and abstraction of modernist art movements, which in its own time aimed at fracturing expectations and generating raw emotion, and in search of critical approval they reproduce that minimalism out of time, in the process creating rather sterile works. I wouldn't bracket Radiohead in that way exactly, but I feel like they drift in that direction.
