This collection of players are poor on the back foot, but that's because we lack quality in key areas, through the spine of the team - that is not the same as Wenger being inept at coaching defence full stop. The 2003/04 team and the 2005/06 run to the Champions League final shows that Wenger is perfectly capable of coaching a a team to defend as well as anyone else, when he has the players with the quality and the attributes to play that way.

What Wenger needs to decide, in my opinion, is whether we are a team that wants to control the game, dominate possession, win the game through technical superiority, or are we a team that is happy sitting back, defending deep and absorbing pressure, and then counter-attacking - because at the moment we are neither, and we can't do either one effectively enough to win games and win trophies. He needs to decide what we are, how we play, and then maximise our ability to play that way.

But he already has decided Rick, he wants us to control the game, dominate possession, win the game through technical superiority.
Problem is you need players of a very high calibre in technique and experience to do this and as you know they ain't cheap and as you also know Wenger refuses to spend that amount of money- so how can we use such a system?
And even with this system it's still necessary to have a physical component especially as we are a PL team.

It's impossible to ignore these realities.

It's impossible to ignore these realities.

You can't call yourself a passing side, and aim to win that way, and then set-up with a midfield containing Alex Song and Abou Diaby. It's doomed to failure.

You also need real quality to play the other way too, Bigs. Power is an expensive commodity in football, especially when it's allied with a modicum of technical ability.

Of course it's all about degrees when players posses both they are much sought after, excellent technique with a hint of power (RvP) or devastating power with a modicum of technical ability (Drogba).
But all in all I'd say technique is rarer and therefore more expensive, but of course in the PL power is more valuable.

no reason we can't do both. we're not going to be as good at the possession game as barcelona, but we can and must assemble a team that is also capable of defending and playing on the counter when the situation demands it.

Thats an interesting suggestion Kami, you don't try to out-Barca Barca just like you don't try to out-Stoke Stoke.
A right blend of technique and power is necessary and the versatility and flexibility to switch one on and off as required.
Although as we play in the PL I think we should tend more towards power.
But we're as much prisoners of our system as Stoke are of theirs

I always thought being able to do both was where Wenger was trying to take us post-Invincibles, that has since been proven wrong. We'd need two new top quality midfielders for a start if we wanted to play the old way Bigs.

The way football at the top level is played nowadays it's decision making that's the key. Most of the top players are physically and technically much of a muchness. The difference between the best and rest is what goes on between the ears.
