Yeah, he benched Giroud and started Walcott up front for several months last season, and Theo wasn't good in that role the occasional performance aside. He still got 10-15 games to prove himself. There was that slump in form for Giroud past Christmas too. Wenger benched him again; still no Alexis up front. It would have been a perfect opportunity to try him there because we needed goals and whatever we were doing didn't work. Then Welbeck came back from a year out and was immediately punted up front.
None of these are world class players under the best of circumstances. It's easy for Wenger to say that Alexis didn't convince him, but at the same time he never gave him a string of games to prove anything. If he had, maybe we would have entered this season thinking Alexis was a genuine option up front and spent more time in the summer looking for wide forwards instead. This is one of those times where he should have trusted his gut feeling. He's got good instincts but they don't help when he keeps acting against them.
