How do you rate this summers transfer dealings?

Ibra already made his mind up, he wanted to play for Mourinho, nothing Wenger could do about that even if he was interested.

He was negotiating with both Milan and LA Galaxy this summer but none of them could afford to take on his wages. Mourinho was just the cherry on top that made him go to United. I think he would have jumped at a Champions League club offering him the same terms.

Either way, it's not exclusively about Ibra. I feel there were more options this summer to sort out the centreforward position—even if just in the short term—than there have been in years, and we didn't really take either of them.

I agree. In theory it was a good signing. It only becomes a problem when we didn't move him on this summer. Could easily have recouped our fee.

I don't think there's any rush - we've used this summer to bring in Gabriel's replacements and push him down the pecking order after 18 months.

Let Mustafi and Holding fully settle into their role before chopping and changing things. I get that his value might be slightly lower next summer but - at 10m - who really gives a toss?

I don't know about that. It's a clash of egos in my opinion, not about being a troublemaker.

Ever since "Ibra don't do trials", we have never ever been seriously linked with him at all. Will Wenger take someone who has such a strong presence in the dressing room?

😆 I think that's more to do with him costing a fuck ton of money at his prime.

End of the day, can't make any judgement until next may, but on the surface this window seems a success. We already had the window dressing, so four solid signings down the spine looks great business.

We weren't going to break our wave structure with Ibra whilst negotiating with Sanchez, Ozil and a couple of others.

Window was an 8 on 10 for me till we moved Wilshere on without getting another technically capable player in. 6 on 10.

That is the way I'm looking at it as well. Yes we didn't sign a world class striker but four very good players added to our squad. Two walk straight into the first team in key weak points in our team.

I can't really rate it as a bad summer when we've got a player in I rate so highly. Think by the end of this season, Xhaka will be rated amongst the best in his position around. Reckon Kami, wherever he is(!), will be absolutely loving the zip he puts on his ground passes too. Great player to watch.

The biggest crime was letting Wilshere go.

Also, infuriates me why we didn't have an approach like this earlier. If you can't sign a world class striker (Ibra/Higgy) for whatever reason, there's nothing stopping us from signing a Perez type striker to help Giroud out or change the way we play. Yet we had to start Yaya Sanogo against Bayern Munich and bring him on in the FA Cup final.

We signed Elneny and Xhaka in two consecutive windows. No reason why this couldn't have been done earlier. Yet we relied on Flamini.

Worst thing about Wenger's failure has basically been the fact that he made the same mistakes again and again. Something that was obvious to any partisan armchair fan. At least this time if (read : when)we fail, it will be after having tried something different.

Very very excited by Mustafi and Xhaka. Need to drop Cazorla as soon as Ramsey is back, though that's for another thread.

Have to consider the transfer window as a 'success' overall if for no other reason than AW has at last directly addressed the most pressing areas with the team and spine.

I have no issue with Wilshere & Chambers on loans to achieve game time and prove injury resilience at other PL clubs = they can help take points off the other contenders whilst not being able to play v AFC.

Could the transfers have been more timely etc? = yes;
should AW have done more regards the under performers? = yes;
is there still more to be done/ = yes.
However it's probably the first time in a decade that we have a match day team that is both fit for purpose AND has a genuine capability to change style from the bench.
That said it all hinges on Perez as intended to be the starting CF, particularly with the Xhaka signing.

Having thought a bit more about it I'm now beginning to think that perhaps AW has managed to pull another slight of hand trick on everyone like he did with Ozil.
By this I mean that everyone thought that Ozil meant a change in style based upon Ozil's records for assists, whereas AW talked about his efficiency with the ball in the final 3rd.
I now suspect that he's done it again with the signings this summer of Xhaka and Perez. Whilst again it looks like an indication of a change of style, IMO the reality is AW is simply looking to improve what we already do. Xhaka's signing isn't so much about adding some steel in midfield as it is about playing the ball vertically between the lines to improve the transition forward, whilst Perez' signing isn't so much about providing competition for Giroud as it is about providing competition for Walcott and cover for Welbeck, as I think AW is looking to be able to play a similar option to that seen with Griezmann and Giroud for France at the EC. IMO if AW had really wanted a different option to Giroud at CF he'd have looked to have signed a player like Janssen / Icardi / Bacca / Cicharito, as opposed to looking at players who could play as much with Giroud or Sanchez as without them.

Say we even had signed Kante, he'd have given us three good months before he inevitably ruptured his spleen and spent a year on the sidelines, before coming back into a team where his input was cheapened because what's around him didn't work. No individual is going to come into this team and take us forward at this point. We have Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in the team and still struggle to score goals. I'm fed up of seeing who we're linked with and who we've missed out on. Individuals don't and won't matter until the structure they're in complements them, and that's not going to change.

The other option is just as unlikely with AW actually signing enough ready to go quality players to enable his intuitive style to work, as opposed to his current preference of using the squad as a crèche with 1-2 elite level players to compensate.

Likewise I'm equally tired of being 'linked' to elite players AW is not likely to sign. Any talk re the likes of Reus or Griezman as potential replacements for Sanchez/Ozil is little more than PR spin and are improbable unless signed as a bargain opportunity, and I don't believe the Manolas talk until we see him in the team kit. Any talk re elite players is unlikely unless their clubs are looking to sell in the first instance.

We could/should have signed the likes of Vidal, Kante, Mahrez, Bacca, Matip, Dembele/Martial in recent times.
