I used to think that too goon and it's true to a certain extent, but his game this season is really out of the norm and off. Simple balls behind the defence and he can over hit it easily and many of his passes get intercepted far too easily.

He's never this bad, but he is not 300k good either. I would focus my energies on Alexis and if there are any remaining cash then we see Ozil's situation.

I agree but it's quite common for the basics to vanish when you're generally off form.

I'm not sure it's worth breaking the bank to keep him either mind you, I'd rather we go for someone who's more of a natural forward. The number 10 role in general is starting to feel like a bit of a luxury.

After the Suarez/Higuain debacle, my feelings are simple: sign any available star as quickly as you can. I'd rather go look for Fabinho, Belotti and Icardi with Ozil in hand. That's a much easier sell than having all your balls in the air.

Berbatov was a good player who got a lot of unfair criticism. Not sure if that's your point, though.

My point was they have simluar strengths and weaknesses.

He certainly was a good player who got unfair critisim at times. His stats were good, he murdered the smaller teams. Technique wise he was pure class, and he tore the league up at times with unreal form.

On the down side he sulked around the pitch at times looking depressed, and you wouldnt want him having your back in a tough away game. And he drifts out of games when his form isn't good.

ManU were no they mugs back then, they didn't make him the highest paid player in the league. Instead they sold him to Fulham at 31. And offered him around the year before but couldn't get the price they wanted.

Ah, but Berbatov wasn't the jewel in the Utd crown. They had absolute superstars in Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney at the peak of his powers.

Also, when they sold Berbatov he was already in the twilight of his career. Ozil should be at his best and brightest right now.

He started the season brightly, confidently. Scored one of the best goals of the champions league group stage. People were talking about him adding goals to his game, and then the team just lost it, went into its shell and our manager couldn't pull them out.

I'm holding off criticizing many of our players (except Theo and Welbeck - theyre shit) until they are allowed a proper manager who knows what he wants and can show them exactly what their roles should be.

Ozil plays in his ideal role here at 10. The main danger to avoid is bribing him to stay when he doesn't want to be here. His current form could easily continue.

If he wants to stay great if he doesn't offering him 300k to stay won't end well.

Ozil is having his most productive season in terms of goals other than when he started senior football at his first club.

I think that the biggest issue is the role AW has him filling, which is to be almost exclusively a last 3rd player as he is used to either push on ahead of Giroud on and off the ball re knock downs and to press, and likewise with Sanches to attack the space in the area when Sanchez drifts wide on the ball from CF.
IMO the Sanchez scenario was beginning to work well until Giroud was returned as starting CF.
As such IMO as it stands both Ozil and Sanchez will add their names to the likes of AA & others that AW has failed to use correctly, because he's using their quality to enable his collective to work, and it's often the quality bargain opportunities he signs that make the biggest compromise of sacrifice in terms of their individual game.
The other issue is in understanding the difference between what we as supporters know of a player's attributes compared to what AW wants from them - just like the difference between a supporter's priorities of a football club & team v the BoD & owner's ideals. AW has never talked about Ozil's contribution to the team re assists, but mainly in terms of his efficiency with the ball in the final 3rd, and it's only been during the last season that he's talked in terms of improving his goal scoring.
Essentially AW has managed to replicate the same issues he had when he pushed Fabregas into AMC = quality supply from midfield.

Every player is asked to adapts to the team a little if they didn't there would be no reason to have a manager. You could just send the 11 players out to play the role they want to play.

Ozil wants to play 10 and he gets to play 10. If he's asked to get ahead a bit more so be it. He's still in a role he's perfectly suited to and he's still an embarrassment in big away games. And a lot of those we're pressed deep and he drops deep and is swatted around by midfielders with real desire.

I'm not disagreeing with you, just that Ozil is hampered as much or more so that most players if he doesn't get the quality supply.
It's the same issues we had with Fabregas as AMC until we got Arteta after Fabregas left.
It's also why Cazorla has more impact on the team than Ozil.

Agreed. I don't think I particularly want us to renew his contract, except if it helps us get better value for him. Many players who could be more useful than him - clearly showing now that there's a reason even a player-first manager like Ancelotti wanted to get rid of him.

Is SportBILD reliable? They're saying Bayern have started discussions for Sanchez.

I definitely think there's a majestic player left in Özil but I don't think that player's ever going to turn up for Arsenal.

Agreed, he could be better with better supply but the ball doesn't fit in luiz's pocket when ozil is in there.
