England's players just aren't as good as they're made out to be, that's what it comes down to.
I don't think that's it either. English players may not be as good as they're made out to be, but they should be performing better than they have done. It's not just this tournament - England have won 6 knock out games since they won the World Cup in 1966 - that suggests a fundamental flaw.
