Yes, and this is awful.
But why do he (and his supporters) want to ban/vet Muslims, and not Hindus or Kenyans, even though most Muslims are white(ish) and most Hindus and Kenyans aren’t? Trump and his supporters are concerned about terrorism, probably since the San Bernardino shooting and Pulse nightclub massacre dominated headlines this election season.
You can argue that he and his supporters are biased for caring more about terrorism than about furniture-related injuries, which kill several times more Americans than terrorists doeach year. But do you see how there’s a difference between “cognitive bias that makes you unreasonably afraid” versus “white supremacy”?
What a truly terrible piece of writing, reads like it was written by somebody who doesn't think beyond reacting childishly to headlines.
Zero depth.
On the whole, it massively misunderstands the nature of Trump's "dogwhistles" and undersells the potential scope of the damage he could do, but many pieces have been overselling the same threat and the end of the article is partially right when it comes to the media promoting hysteria in certain instances.
I think many people, especially those outside of the US, perhaps do not fully realize the massive inertia in America's federalist system of governance. Obama has made this point himself in recent days if I'm not mistaken. Trump may well be able to enact some of the more deleterious and odious parts of his agenda, but they'll be slow moving and there will be time to process them, filibuster them and so on
