She wasn't statesman like at all in the debates. She talked about going high while constantly going low. She tried to hit him with scandals more than policy, she played the game at his level, she even tried a stupid little shimmy dance cos she knew it'd play well on social media. You don't do that yourself on stage if you want to be statesmanlike, as I said earlier you either leak it or you get a surrogate to talk about it. I agree that the racist/misogynistic/homophobic element existed before trump and that they represent a significant challenge across many states. As you mention, we've certainly seen this here in Australia. But my point is that this isn't the only phenomena at play, because as you said, that element has been active in US politics prior to Trump.

Unfortunately they've got the patriot act and i wouldn't put it past them to mis-use it against these people.
One thing about the right is they act quickly when they've got the advantage and they have a right-leaning congress and senate for the next two years. Obama, like Bill Clinton, wasted his advantage and spent the last six years having to water down everything till he was forced to use executive powers to get anything done.
We see the same here where governments are much more powerful due to the "first past the post" electoral system. We saw tony blair's massive majority labour dilly-dallying with compromise whereas the tories haven't messed about with implementing their policies, however unpopular

Was just listening to the In the Weeds podcast there and they were saying how Hillary didn't even have an office in some of the rust belt states that have been voting democrat since 2000. Thats what cost her this election more than anything. Those states flipping is exactly where she lost it.

But why? She had enough resources and manpower to maintain her support. I imagine most people who stayed at home thought she would win by default/didn't really care enough.

In fact, I suspect if Trump was replaced by Generic Republician candidate she might have lost by a larger margin since some of the turnout was driven by anti-Trump initiatives rather than pro-Clinton.

I think because they trusted the polling too much and took it for granted that she'd win them. Apparently she had diverted resources to states like Texas in hopes of flipping them blue. It seems kind of arrogant now but she used the same polling science etc that had been cited as a major reason for Obamas wins. I think the takeaway is you can't rely so heavily on those methods and you can't take states you assume are with you for granted.

And yeah I do think the media and the polls hurt her in those states that the media said would definitely go her way.

I'd say so too. Turnout was down for both but Mitt Romney was about as generic a Republican as you could find and he got more votes than Trump.
