i think they are honestly going to give up on the white house and put all of their resources into keeping control of the senate. barring a huge disaster, they'll keep the house. and if they can keep the senate, they can keep the country locked into 4 more years of gridlock.
generally speaking, dems do better in presidential years in terms of senate seats. they need a net +5 gain to get control of the senate. there are 12 more republican seats up for grabs this term (they were the tea party weirdos from 2010) given that senate races are often hoping that the presidential nominee will help their cause, and most republicans are running away from trump, this is a huge chance for the dems.
if the democrats fuck up 2016, they basically need to just tear the party down and start over.
