How is signing Vardy, player of the season, more wrong than signing Podolski, Giroud or Welbeck?
that type of logic doesn't work for me. comparing him to a bad signing in the past doesn't mean he'll be a good signing. podolski, giroud and welbeck dont look like great signings now and they didn't look particularly great when we signed them.
part of the problem is that every signing the club makes comes with incomplete information. we have no idea how the player will be utilized, how he will settle with his teammates, etc. we only know what the player did for his old team, what his form has been like the last few years, and what kind of player he is.
if you look at leicester last season and compare them to arsenal last season (and the last few seasons), they are two polar opposite teams. leicester played with 2 strikers and played very direct. we played with one striker and played much slower, deliberate build-up style football.
vardy has never played european football and has never played under the scrutiny of a huge transfer fee/wages. it is impossible to really know how he will adapt to arsenal the club as well as how he will adapt to playing in a completely different style of team.
if this happens, of course i am going to root for him and hope that he can take whatever magic he conjured up last year and replicate it for at least the next 2-3 seasons. if he fizzles out after that, so be it, we can replace him. im just not entirely confident that he'll walk into our team and again score 25 goals next season. if you want someone who can score 15-20 goals in 38 games, we've already got the french version here. we need someone who is going to score 25-30. is vardy that guy? i honestly dont know. if we sign him, i hope he is. until we sign him, i'll hold out hope we can sign someone who is more talented.
