Difference is Claud Chelsea only hire world class managers, they would never allow guys like Avram Grant, Scolari, AVB, Roberto Di Matteo and Frank Lampard, to spend that sort of money.

I think we are making a lot of assumptions about what Edu can achieve. This is his first window. It’s his duty to construct a sensible, coherent squad. If Arteta fails with the squad, two things
1) failing with a good squad looks very different from failing with a shit squad
2) we dump him and bring in another manager

I just do t subscribe to the idea that you have a B-grade coach, so you shouldn’t have A-grade players.

Hope you guys are being sarcastic. 250m is nothing and we need that amount to improve our squad badly. Wenger used to have that much money sitting in the bank not spending till it rots.

Of course we can burn down Emirates if we sign Ramsdale or Raya though.

I think a key difference is that they acknowledge when they get it wrong much faster than we do. It can get comical at times though when they burn through managers and personnel at Serie A rate.

I agree that they don't have the same need to plan for the longterm as we do, but it also means we need to be much smarter and quicker in the market, not more lethargic and wasteful. It's just hard to feel that we have people who meet those standards at the moment. Our current transfer strategy if rumours are to be believed seems more like Ferguson's at United, but without the massive success and resources to lean on. If we get £150 million worth of investment wrong (never mind £250 million) it could literally destroy us for years.

The difference is if you finish 8th as Chelsea manager you are out the door and another manager comes in and is handed a new big transfer pot.

I don't think our spending should be affected by who the manager is. This is also why I don't think the manager should have much to say regarding who we sign. If Arteta gets fired in November, whatever money we spend this summer won't be wasted if the club has an overall plan for the squad. Chelsea don't need to completely change up the squad just because Lampard was the coach when the players was bought.

Whether I trust Edu to be the man with the overall plan is a different question though - I don't. But if we spend badly this summer I don't blame Arteta. He shouldn't get that kind of power.

He shouldn't have that power but he does so if the transfers flop then he and those above him have to take the blame.

At least there will be nothing for him to hide behind after this summer.

He can be blamed in that sense, but I don't want the club to be driven in a way that the summer business i affected by whether we don't know if the manager stays or goes. The budget should be the same, the plans should be the same.

Yeah that's fair, can't argue with any of that but I'll take any crumb of comfort that I can. That Josh is willing to sanction big money spending is good news regardless, it would have been far more in keeping with our recent history to try and make more 'shrewd' signings and going nowhere fast.

It suggests that there is the right urgency from the very top to get us back up towards the top and I reckon their patience in Arteta won't last very long if he continues to falter for much longer.
