Thats never going to work against Stoke and the like.

Yeah, I don't for a second think van Gaal is done with his shopping. They still need a couple of players, but then I really don't see what Stoke or any other team has to do with it working or not.
Because whatever way you dress it up that's 5 defenders and then 5 attackers with no pace.
