I actually think we've not gambled on youth enough recently, probably because our recruitment in the 17-23 bracket hasn't been up to scratch.

But you look at Wenger's first 10 years here and we were rewarded a lot for gambling on young players. Get some quality around them and I reckon they'll pan out if you think they're good enough.

and we need to gamble because if the other option is playing in the market where garbage like mustafi and xhaka cost 35m then we're fucked. buy as many really talented under 21 players we can find and hope a few develop.

Definitely. It's basically what Chelsea did - instead of getting 1 or 2 big talents for every position you get 5 or 6. That's how you end up with someone that makes it.

Their mistake was having someone like Mourinho in charge of letting through players like de Bruyne and Salah. They would have ruled Premier League right now otherwise.

and it's not like those players took many years to show their elite ability where you could excuse moroninho/chelsea by saying they're trying to win games now, not 5 years from now. anyway i'm so happy he fucked them. at least those players are bossing from the northwest of england and not the southwest of london.

If Salah and De Bruyne are world class now they'd have been good/very good when Chelsea had them.

And it's the same for most top players, which is why buying young is the way to go.

A lot of the value seems to be gone from young players. All the rich clubs are trying to get the top youngsters now. I think thats why we've come up short on signing talented kids recently.

The very top clubs are stupid though, they'll go for the big names and hype. Case in point, Barcelona with Dembele. But there's plenty more to be had where value can be found. The key is being able to spot and grab these guys just before they go big. What wouldn't hurt is if we were able to recapture our reputation for developing young talent.

If mislintat is as good his reputation suggests, then i don't mind talking punts like this. There's no established defenders worth spending megabucks on, especially with our shrunken budget

The special skill we need to establish is being able to get valuations right so that we are buying 12 months before Barca and United would, at just below the valuation they would be. What that means is we need to take an extra year’s risk - ie the player could still be a bust. So the midfielders at Lyon, for example, we should be able to take a position on whether we should be bidding on some of those types of players now (eg Tousart, Ndombele). If they plan out, next year will be too late.

We're definitely back to square one in terms of recruiting players earlier in their careers and growing them. I'm hoping we become a bit like a souped up BVB that recruits and nurtures great young talent, but with the financial clout to actually keep them in their prime years

Yeah. Stack all the best young players around and play some exciting football. That's the way to go and it should be the way to go for a long time.

I can't believe once we start to sign some older players we completely neglect this front again.

We've already gone through playing beautiful football and giving kids a chance phase but we ended up as laughing stocks because we were winning f*ck all. 'Yeah the kids are great and they play beautiful but what have they won in the last X years?'

After a while even the kids started agitating for moves because they wanted to win trophies. We've been irrelevant at the top level for a long time, therefore I'd like us to put all that beautiful to one side for the time being and focus on becoming a competitive team again capable of winning the biggest trophies (PL, CL). I'd like us to become very hard to beat and play a game primarily based on winning at all cost (even it means parking the bus).

Linked with Zivkovic - mouth watering. If true, that along with the interest in Malcom in the summer show the kind of player we are looking to buy - perhaps to balance out Ozil on one flank. Surprisingly, both right sided players.
