He is in the same bracket as the Japanese guy we bought last summer the way I see it. We should definitely go for guys like him, but he shouldn't be in the first team squad until he is there on merit.

Exactly. And its not like we are going to lose a ton if he doesn't work out. Its a solid investment with a small possibility of turning out great. Of course we should be making deals like this. Its not like he'd be our Sanchez replacement.

what worries me is how many stories i've heard about missed targets in the last 2-3 years. we might have all the best intentions but for whatever reason aren't getting our number 1 targets over the line. i don't believe xhaka, mustafi, and certainly not perez were our first choice last season.

We aren't getting our targets because we won't pay, and then desperation forces our hand, so we end up overpaying for lesser players.

Except I don't think that was the intention & Giroud was meant to be an alternative from the bench.
AW has supposedly been in the market for a CF every summer, but fails to resolve the issue because of his payer valuations and refusal to accept market values.
In the mean time Giroud remains as starting CF and then expects the role is his.

Considering how unusually early in the Summer we brought in Xhaka, I'm pretty sure he was Wenger's first choice. Mustafi came too late but we haggled with Valencia for a long period so I'm guessing he was also on of his top wishes. Perez however, was obviously a panic signing.

If I remember correctly we only moved for Manolas when Valencia wouldn't budge on Mustafi's price.

According to rumours we didn't let Wilshere join them on loan because of how they dealt with us regarding Manolas.

We could as he's more a WF than CF - considering AW has used the Wide attacking role to play TH, RVP, Walcott, Ox, Iwobi as part of their development.
Not to forget that Aw used a 19 year old Anelka as CF to replace Wright.
Essentially I suspect that Onyekuru would be in lieu of Mbappe.

Agreed to all points.

IIRC we moved from Manolas because his price went up to 35m, and by the time we went back he was no longer available re finding a replacement.
I thought there was another CB we were interested in Rugani(??) but the same thong happened re price etc.
I also thought that we went to walk from Mustafi when we were told his price but we had no other options available.

Thought I'd read something from Kante/Keita that he turned us down because we could not give an assurance re playing time?
That being the case & Mbappe stating that he wants playing time, then AW knows what he needs to do.

You got it the other way round. Mustafi was our back up and our haggling over a few millions ended up costing our UCL place and tens of millions.
