From my skimming of the case the ruling was so severe because he tried hiding assets.
I reckon that's going to continue to count against him.

There will be 2 appeals, each subsequent appeal will lower the amount substantially, and probably like what happens in most of these situations between the first and 2nd appeal the wife will run out of money and have to settle. The lawyers will drag the process out for as long as possible to ensure this.
Also quite a lot of the money that she wants is held in trust for their daughter who has sided with her father (she announced it mid-trial), the appellate courts won't break the trusts because by doing so Switzerland becomes a much less friendly place to store money.
As a last resort he moves the assets back to Russia and no Swiss or EU court can touch it, and no Russian court will award her anything substantive.
