Better footballer? fat?
Im yet to here a reasonable argument. Very similar scoring records for Madrid. Played for the same team one is called sacrificing himself and setting up chances while the other they say is benefiting from high chances created (Yet having 50-60 assists to his name). "Upgrade to every other striker in the league bar Aguero" but scored 20 league goals once for Madrid.
I don't think Irish Gunner meant fat as in obese.
Anyway, I know you find it hard to believe, but players are judged on more than just their goal scoring records. I feel like I've followed Benzema for most of his career - ever since he destroyed United when he was a Lyon player. He's quite simply a better footballer. He's got better technique, vision, appreciation of the game - and he's easily a much better big game player.
You like goal stats, don't you? Have a look at Benzema's record in the CL - he's got 42 goals in 75 appearances. This is all the more impressive because he doesn't take pens and is happy to play second fiddle to Ronaldo. When he was Lyon player, his record was far more impressive in the CL. Meanwhile Higuain's only managed around 13 in 55 appearances (with a bulk of them coming as a Napoli player i.e. big fish, small pond). Moreover, Benzema's done it fairly consistently in the big games. And, to add context to the numbers, Benzemas scored against nearly all the top teams out there: Barca, Bayern, Dortmund, Man U, Man City, Liverpool, AC Milan - and I'd say Benzema usually turns up in most of the El Classico's I've watched as well.
And Benzema's a better team player. Fuck their assists stats - they mean less than fuck all. The reason people say Benzema's willing to sacrifice himself is for all the work he does off the ball, because he's always the first to drag defenders out of position and to create space for players running in behind. Plus he always looks to release the ball quickly and keep the game moving - certainly when compared to Higuain and that's purely because he's a better footballer.
That isn't to slag off Higuain - he's a good striker. I'd take him at Arsenal as well, but he's not on the same league as Benzema - he's a flat track bully with no bottle.
Don't get me wrong, in the grand scheme of things, Benzema isn't fit to clean the boots of those before him like Henry, Eto'o, Shevachenko or even van Nistelrooy but at the moment he's one of the best out there.
