Good point. Avoiding direct spoilers, Opie's current status made some narrative sense but also seemed pretty much like Sutter answering the need for a "highlight" moment after the first third of that season.
It was also arguably a waste of that character's dramatic potential in relation to the rest of the cast.
So I'd file that under "distortions due to commercial imperatives" along with most of SoA's other problems.
