That Overmars fee looks massive in this context, but are we sure about the turnover numbers? The year was '97, not '96, and why it should be significantly lower than two years previously is hard to understand. According to Wikipedia we bought for a total of almost 17 m that season. Which may go some way to explain our success that season, as it would take a spend of almost 300 million to equal it this summer.
