Yeah, I think this is the most worrying aspect of the transfer window at the moment. We were clearly in for Mkhitaryan and it doesn't take a genius to see why he "preferred United" when you see those wages reported. Chelsea and City used to do the exact same thing when they were the ones chasing top 4. It's probably a big reason we weren't that interested in Zlatan too, age aside. If we'd given him £250K per week it would have put us in an impossible position when we're trying to renegotiate deals with Özil and Sanchez.

I'm not sure what Real's wage bill looks like, but anyone they might release this summer (like Kroos or James or maybe even Isco) would probably come with similar complications. Even if we pony up the transfer fee there will be 3-4 other clubs willing to offer them >£200K in wages.

We need to close the wage gap for the top earners as much as possible though, that much is clear.

City and Chelsea have unlimited funds they both wrote off around a billion to break even after their big spending and with ffp gone they can do that again. And manu just make tons of cash. I think they have deeper pockets and dig deeper.

United made £395.2m last year.

But they've signed a sponsorhip deal worth £75m per year and a kit deal worth £55m per year.

£130m added onto nearly £400m will put them as #1 come next year in the money league. (even without CL)

So yeah... they have a lot more money than us, and it's not a case of us not digging a bit deeper.

They can have 3 players on £300k per week, and the Adidas sponsor will cover that alone. Bummer, because we're a big brand but we don't get enough.

Our £30m per season looks like canon fodder in comparison and the reality is we've got to search for B- players rather than the A* rated players, as much as we hate to admit it, that's the truth at the moment. We may pull of a great deal if the moment arises just like Ozil, which is now looking like an absolute steal.

It's the way sponserships work if your not top 2 they don't want to know. Nike and addidas didn't even want our shirts, liverpool had to go with Warrior. Spurs have struggled to attract the big names aswell they've gone from le coq, hummel, umbro, pony, addidas, kappa, puma, under armour.

Atletico sign Croatia defender Vrsaljko from Sassuolo. He should be good long term replacement for Juanfran.

Any idea how much he went for?

I wishlisted him a month or two back. I've watched a bit of Sassuolo the last two seasons and I think he's one of the most underrated talents around. I would have signed him and tried to move Bellerin to the left flank instead.

Mkhi to Yanited is official. EUR 30 mm by most reports. Must say I'm quite pssed we didn't get him, despite all the rumours of the obscene wages. I know we can't afford it, but am still pssed.

Ramadan Sobhy going to Stoke for 3.5 mm apparently. Wasn't he really highly rated? Surprised at both the fee and the club, if true.

I don't think he's anywhere near as talented as Bellerin personally, but he's a good player. Kept an eye in him over the years since we were heavily linked with him when he was 18/19.

Wouldn't have made sense to switch Bellerin to left back though since he's only really got one good foot and Vrsaljko is just as comfortable on either side. Would have took the Croat in the squad for that versatility alone.

Mkhitaryan to United doesn't bother me much. He's a good player but it's just further proof they have to shop in a different store to Madrid, Barca, Bayern, PSG, City. And he's not a player I'd be overly excited about coming here - I've always found him stupid in his decision making and inefficient in the final third. I certainly don't rate him as a top class player .

Anwyay,let's see what he does next season.

We have to shop in a different store to those clubs too so I'd say it bothers me.

For a player who's supposedly inefficient in the final third he racked up 23 goals and 20 plus assists last season. I'd take that kind of inefficiency here.

Bingo.

Right now even the likes of Palace can stump up 32m for a striker. That's after they've just paid 13m for Townsend and 10m for Tomkins.

People have to accept that 32m now is not what it was 2-3 years ago.

We should be easily able to spend 40-50m for a striker and have money left over.

I think it's the opposite from watching them, actually. Vrsaljko plays leftback for his national team and it's been a real eye opener. He's so useless out there compared to how he plays at club level. He's a better rightback than Bellerin is currently, and I rate Bellerin's weaker foot highly. I think our left flank would suit Bellers better in the long run too, and we need a new body out there anyway. I reckon Monreal is finished soon. We might get another season out of him, two if we're lucky, but if he has a long-term future here it'll probably be as a backup centreback eventually.
