I agree.
But to say he's not a good defender because his defending isn't great doesn't bode well with me, especially considering the future of football will lean towards your CB's attacking the space in front of you, which is what Stones is great at.
If United/City/Chelsea spend £50m on him it'll be because they see him as the future and he'll be a CB that can really advance with the ball when it's moved across the field, providing he has adequate cover.
The game has already evolved over the last 10-15 years so that fullbacks have to be just as good at attacking as they are at defending, as you all probably know unless you've been living under a rock. That obviously cannot happen with centre backs, but there's many occasions during a game that the CB will receive the ball with space to run into but will simply move the ball on due to his manager not allowing him to roam forward OR for just being limited technically to do that.
The next time Germany play, just watch whenever Jerome Boateng has the ball at his feet and space in front; he's going to attack it to the point he's playing where a normal CM would be.
The best defenders nowadays are required to be good on the ball so that teams can keep possession better than ever before.
We're even seeing midfielders converted into CBs sometimes because of that. With John Stones, I see him as the future. Whether or not he'll fulfill his potential is yet to be seen, but the huge fee's will be because of this change in the way football is heading + His age + English quota + Speed + Ability to attack space = Large fee.
I posted a video of a young Ajax defender Jaïro Riedewald who is another one to watch who does just that, take the ball forward, spray passes around.
