I don't get the cynical comments - is it a difficulty to accept we were underestimating him? people forget they're not the manager - nobody risks being sacked if they were wrong 🙂 . Besides - isn't that what we're here for - talk about the developing, the surprising, the less obvious?
Joel was underwhelming until late, but to deny what he's been showing lately is truly short sighted, and unfair.
Didn't do much yesterday? surely the play of the day is on his name. Beside that assist he really should have had 2 more (Flam to the bar, Feo godknowswhathewasthinkingmissingthat), and maybe even 3 (Giroud run a millisecond too early). He was there building, he was showing up for the ball, he was pressing upfield and worked tirelessly (even if not perfectly) in defense. To those who say "he didn't actually do much", what grade (number) would you give his game? IMO that is an 8 performance easy (and I won't complain when Jones says it's higher than that).
Big question, of course - can he keep it up? and is he going to continue to improve (and why would that be unlikely, as he started to with getting regular game time? it's only now that we see Costa-Rica's Joel playing for us). And then - will he stay fit (an Arsenal must question).
Super from Joel. Don't know about "this year's Coq", but if the trend continues "this year's Joel" is good enough for me - and just what we needed in this dreadful time.
