Messi is not greater than Maradona.

I imagine these arguments have been discussed to death but firstly Messi needs to prove himself outside Spain.

To pretty much say Maradona would be just a glorified Denilson (not the lazy cunt that played for us) is stupid and quite frankly, an embarrassing comment to make. Maradona was a genius and proven in not just one league. Don't forget he was playing in the toughest league probably of all time in the 80s and was head and shoulders above everyone.

I can go on and on and on.

Go to Argentina and ask who is better, Maradona or Messi and 90% of people will say the former. By the way, there is going to be a kick ass documentary (same guy who did Senna and Amy) about Maradona coming out in a year or so about his time in Naples, especially his association with the Italian mafia, going to be very, very interesting.

I'd like to add on to this. I think comparing Messi and Maradona is the not the best comparison because they had different roles. Maradona was the classic #10 and creator while Messi has played as a (wide or central) forward for most of his career.

Longevity will give the nod to Messi, barring injury. He'll likely end up as Argentina's top scorer and in top 3 in terms of caps and he's not even very good for the national side compared to his club form.

As I've said, I thought Maradona was more fun to watch. Two things though: The Argentinians have never been too fond of Messi as far as I can tell. He moved to Spain as a kid, and the Argies conveniently see him as a Spaniard whenever he doesn't deliver for Argentina. Maradona, on the other hand, represents so much more than football for a vast amount of Argentinians. I don't think it matters one iota to the average Argentinian what Messi will ever do; he will never, ever be regarded as better than Maradona by them. Secondly, I think it is impossible to really compare players from different eras, and I also don't think it is all that important. I'm glad I've lived to see them both actually.

I wasn't even talking about his talent level, he's far beyond the two you've mentioned obviously. I'm saying comparisons of players whose playing times are more than two decades apart include some sort of "fairytale element" because of the rapid improvement in training regimes etc

If a guy with Maradona's talent was born today he'd be surely an all time great, but if you could send the Maradona of the 80s to the future he'd struggle with the vastly superior pace of the game today. It's not that controversial a statement so I'll assume you just misunderstood me and let it go 🙂

Yeah, the change of the game means it is almost impossible to compare players from different eras. Maradona was physically a lot more robust than Messi is for instance. I suspect Messi would have been absolutely kicked to pieces had he played when Maradona did is my guess.

Both him and Navas are pretty underrated.

Navas got some recognition earlier this season when he was singlehandedly winning points for Real week in week out but yeah, compared to most big names he's underrated as well, one of the very best in Europe.
