Your preference demands a heavy reduction of the distinctions of Tolkien I was talking about, and the possibilities of adaptation in general, and doesn't really address my point at all. Great, you dislike the Silmarillion, I don't. I think a series length screen adaptation of it would be a fascinating project.

Villeneuve is making a new Dune film right now. I hope they translate a lot of the qualities of the source material, because if it's not a pompous eco-epic ripping off mid century oil geopolitics, with a lot of the cinematic equivalent of a footnote, it'll probably be a failure.

😆 As I recall it, you were the one who implied that a tv show similar to the films would be for us simple folks who just want something soap operish reminiscent of Tolkien with a quicker tempo.

Sure. Personally I can't say that the "ponderous trajectories, the absence of eroticism and romance, the bombastic language" or any of those other things ever were intrinsically important to me when Tolkien's stories, worlds and mythological concepts first captivated me. It's not like he wrote the Iliad.

I think all of those things drew me in when I read it as a kid to be honest, because it created the sense of being Very, Very Serious that I craved. Definitely loved the maps, all the quasi-lyrical excursions into history, and the Elvish passages.

Whereas without a lot of care, this sort of thing is what you can expect from a TV series:

Oh I would love for this to work. I must have read the book about 8 times. Never the sequels though. I tried with the second one but couldn't manage it.

I've just finished listening to Rob Lowe read his autobiography - it's quite fun if you like that sort of thing, and yes he does mention that video tape. He also says he was asked to test for Paul Atreides in the film version back in the 80s or whenever it was. He turned the role down because he would have been required to sign for 2 or 3 sequels, and he wasn't up for that, especially as his character apparently becomes a sand worm later on. Glad I didn't read the alter books.

Yeah. Reportedly Villeneuve has canvassed the possibility of sequels with the studio.

I think it might be brilliant. Villeneuve has the chops to pull it together, it's a far richer and more relevant fictional milieu than Blade Runner or most other sf source material, and it's still never really been done well, not as well as Jackson's LotR anyway.

Nothing's done yet. They're just 'in talks'. I reckon Amazon want to see if the viewers and the social media buzz keep increasing before they commit to something that's going to cost them an awful lot of money over the next few years. A decision would have to be made very soon though.

Binged on the rest of Lost in Space. It was actually pretty good. One of those shows I’d have loved as a child and it’s still a good family show that doesn’t take it self too seriously. It’s a shame my oldest is still a little too young to enjoy a show like this. There’s worse ways to spend your time.

Atlanta is extremely watchable.

I'm onto season two and the writing for the show is consistently top tier. The combination of perceptive social comment, drama verging on neorealism, and situation comedy is superb.

I didn't like Atlanta, but my dislike for Glover might have coloured my perception of the show.

I just finished the first season of Killing Eve though. That show is incredible. Completely unpredictable and enjoyable like few other things in recent memory.

I just grabbed a few episodes of Killing Eve today.

Been sick the last few days so binged the Walking Deads latest season. Still pretty bad, ending of the season was awful but its far more watchable in a big binge than week too week.

I always save it for a binge, probably why I enjoy it more than most on here? The end of last season was pretty shit though and completely unbelievable.
