Your preference demands a heavy reduction of the distinctions of Tolkien I was talking about, and the possibilities of adaptation in general, and doesn't really address my point at all. Great, you dislike the Silmarillion, I don't. I think a series length screen adaptation of it would be a fascinating project.
Villeneuve is making a new Dune film right now. I hope they translate a lot of the qualities of the source material, because if it's not a pompous eco-epic ripping off mid century oil geopolitics, with a lot of the cinematic equivalent of a footnote, it'll probably be a failure.
