Good but overrated.
Overrated how? I think it's perfect.
Well, I said it was good …
The premise of the show seemed to be using the rapid evolution of psychoanalytically driven advertising to reflect on history itself. In each episode we had insights into human need and desire, and each season was punctuated by notable historical moments.
To structure the drama we were given main characters struggling with questions of identity and self-actualisation.
By the end of three or four seasons the characters had taken over and become the premise. Although they were engaging enough, I just didn't care as much how things "turned out" for them. In particular Don and Betty's second relationships ended up with way too much screen time.
Like a lot of prestige drama it was a victim of its own success. Matt Weiner agreed it would never have run to so many seasons if it hadn't become a sensation.
