Oh for sure. You can see a lot of that show in The Night Of. Clearly a major inspiration.

You know Turturos part was supposed to be for Gandolfini?

Yep. And while I'm as big a Gandolfini fan as they come I think Turturro is great in the role. It would be a real treat to have a scene with Gandolfini and Michael K. Williams though. That would be the television version of the dinner scene in Heat.

Haha yeah that would have been cool. Although Turturro hasn't had a scene with him yet so it may not have happened anyway. Agree Turturro is great in the role, makes me sad whenever I see Gandolfinis name pop up as a producer at the start though.

I really only remember Turturro from the Transformers movies before this, didn't know he could be so good.

I binge-watched the first season of Unreal today. That was just ridiculously entertaining. Constance Zimmer is great as usual.

Since I've just started the final season of The Shield I'm deciding which show to watch next: The Wire or The Sopranos.

I'm going to stick to my format of one season a month. Probably watch the other show when I'm done.

Anyone got a suggestion of which to watch first?

I prefer the Sopranos but its a win for you either way. Its like comparing Henry and Adams, its more a matter of preference than of quality.

The Sopranos is the better show. But definitely watch both. The Wire is incredible in its own right.

The Wire is a good show but the Sopranos is a far more entertaining watch in my view. It's so easy to watch.

it was beautifully shot and acted, but the plot fell into quite a few cliches

The Wire is not as easy to get in but it's far better in my book.

I'd vote for The Wire as it's phenomenal and such a deep show in regards to characters and topics. Worth reading about who the actors are too (many locals to Baltimore /east coast).

I think The Wire was significantly better, it had much more to say about the real world than The Sopranos did.

With the benefit of hindsight, the Sopranos was better than The Wire in nearly every sense, from its observation and analysis of American social decline, to its originality, to its literary qualities and its satisfying finale.

The Wire is about institutions, the Sopranos is about characters. Thats the main difference I think. For that reason I think there is far more depth and rewatchability to the Sopranos. And I've watched The Wire in its entirety 3 times so I'm not denigrating it, its still brilliant.
