Aside from Enterprise (which, let's be honest, was a complete affront from the first episode to the last) and the JJ Abrams films (first one excluded) I'm struggling to think of much bad trek. The first season of Discovery was a bit weak here and there but had some undeniable strengths too. I think it holds up well compared to what's currently on tv.
I for one am excited about this show. No fictional character has ever embodied future enlightenment like Picard. I think he's pretty unique, and the themes and values of the whole TNG era are arguably even more relevant today than they were in the early 90s. Star Trek has always been a tv universe where characters are actually allowed to age naturally too, so that should not be an issue. On the contrary, I think it's great that they signed off on this before Stewart dies. Once he's gone they'll never be able to revisit the character.
