If we're serious about winning silverware then we need to bring in a quality CB, no kid or old continental. Vermy coould very likely be out for the whole season. Cahill or similar would do, worth paying money for
I'd try for Ciani again.

It's a shit load of money, especially for us. So, you'd admit he's okay, and nothing more than that? 😉

I suppose that's what I am as good as saying. Put it this way, Cahill's a very good centre half, definitely one of the better ones in the country, but we'd be paying £20M for a player that's inferior to Vermaelen in just about every way.

That's a good shout, Klaus.
If Wenger is not going to sign the calibre of CB that would be a first team starter for any of our PL rivals then he can forget about winning anything this year other than the CC.
It's not the time for temporary solutions. If he's seriously thinking of re-signing Sol he needs his head examined.

Better to have him than not I suppose, but he wouldn't have been up to it when it really matters. Mind you, neither is Squillaci.
Fucking hell. Just when the injury situation looked too good to be true, BANG, crisis again.
I don't think the Nordtveit sale has anything to do with this. The boy never even turned out for the first team. If we had sold someone like Squillaci, it would have looked silly. But, Nordveit? No.
This is a big moment for Wenger. Our title challenge could be won or lost on what he does this month. It's a pity we could not find better CBs in the summer as we would be happy to take a 2nd tier CB now.
I wouldn't be happy to take a "2nd tier" centreback. We've got to go out and get as good a centre half as is available.

Who would you go for then? It's not like we can go out and buy Vidic, we have to settle for someone who's looked good at a lesser club who could make the step up.
That might be only 2nd tier. And all our CBs are 2nd tier at best except Vermaelen.
Didn't write that sentence clearly. I meant to say that IF we had bought a top centre back in the summer (instead of one of Kos or Squid), then we would be happy to settle for a 2nd tier centre back now.
Oh right gotcha. In that case I agree.
Tony, I would say Djourou has had a couple of months now of playing like a top class centre back. Put it this way, if we could go out and sign a clone of him, it would be a damn good signing, no?

It doesn't really matter who i'd go for, but i don't think you'd find many disagreeing with me that £20m on Gary Cahill could be spent on someone much, much better.
If you want names, then i think we could do alot worse than make a move for someone like Daniel Agger.
It's basically an opportunity to re-do the shit Squillaci signing.
That amount of money could be better spent, no one here would disagree, but do you really think there are "much, much better" centre backs out there? I think he's a really good player.

Of course it would be a great signing.
But he's still 2nd tier even though he's had a great couple of months. "A class" for me is Vidic level.
Cahill or Samba is good for me. This is exactly the sort of position that Wenger has failed at for years, signing the right quality at the right time. Let's watch him this season.
I like Cahill as someone who knows the league and can probably slot in a little more easily than someone from the continent.
We should get Zapata just for his name.

Well, Wenger pulled one out of the bag with Vermaelen for nearly half the touted price of Cahill. I don't see why we couldn't find someone in the next tier as Tony puts it for that sort of fee.
Would love Agger but he's inury prone and Liverpool may be a sane club again.
