we're not going to get a "real" CB. no reason to buy a permanent solution to a temporary problem. some people are starting to ask for a second XI that's nearly as good as the first XI and that's simply not reasonable.

It's understandable right now, though, Kami. Our second team, and it was stronger than that if we're honest, failed to beat both Leeds and Ipswich, and managed to leave us all fearing they're going to come in and kill our chances later on in the season.

I think it's important that Wilshere, Fabregas and van Persie stay fit. We have other good players, but those three are giving us alot right now, and we don't have the players in the squad who could come close to replacing them.

I think it's down to the fact that we're an injury to Djourou away from the dreaded Squillaci-Koscielny partnership that scares people.

Well we kept hearing how we had great strength in depth earlier in the season, thats now show to be utter tosh.
Our lack of a settled defence is no temporary problem but one we've had for a few seasons.
I agree that Wenger will baulk at buying a proper defender but would be quite happy to spoof 10M on some kid that plays as an attacking midfielder so he can sell him on in a few years for a nice profit..

It all comes down to how much importance the board place on winning the title, not very much it seems.

It has been being rumoured today that Vermaelen's "operation" is a removal of his plantaris tendon:

I had no idea what the hell that was before ten minutes ago, but as you can sort of see on the anatomical diagram ...

... it's some sort of mini-tendon that runs alongside the Achilles. Apparently it can be "implicated" in Achilles tendinopathy. Presumably if this was the cause it would result in a better prognosis than other possible causes including a permanently fucked actual Achilles tendon.

Here's hoping this bad tendon can be removed so that the good one can work properly and we can have our best centre half back.

I was't sure where I read it, but apparently there were quotes from Vermaelen that gives it a little bit more colour - the tendon that's being removed has no major function, but is apparently rubbing against his achilles, which is what's causing the irritation.

Yep, that's more or less what I read as well. This little, useless tendon is aggravating his real Achilles by obstructing its operation, contributing to his soreness problems.

Wenger seems confident that TV will be back within 4 to 6 weeks following the "procedure".

4-6 weeks means out until mid March, yeah. Add another month to get back to fitness and he's probably no use at all for the title chase. Though you never know.

4-6 weeks is the end of Feb or even mid Feb if you want to be optimistic. Assuming this is actually the problem then you'd imagine he'd be back by mid March.

I've pencilled him in to be on the bench for the our Carling Cup final victory, coming on with 10 minutes to go when we're 4-0 up, then he'll start and play well against Sunderland and get MOTM in our sterling backs to the wall, gladiatorial, heroic victory at the Nou Camp.

Do you think that's optimistic?

The way Vermaelen's season has gone so far the idea that he might play in the Barcelona game seems almost insanely optimistic 🙂

However if this "procedure" is as minor as Wenger seems to be suggesting maybe he might be back by then.

I'm not sure I trust Wenger on this though, he could just be covering himself for an imminent decision not to sign a CB.

6 weeks. I'd settle for that so long as he doesn't keep getting these setbacks. Vermaelen returning would be huge, can't wait to see him lining out beside Djourou.

Its easy to look at our CB's right now and think we're weak there but when TV returns i think we'll realise we actually have a more than decent quartet. Any defence would look significantly weaker if their best CB missed 5/6 months of football.

We're going to miss TV until March now at least by the looks of things, then he isn't just walk back into the team like there was no problem either, he'll take another month to regain his match sharpness and stamina. And this is during the busiest period of the season. We desperately need another centre half. Fuck the longterm, this could be our year and we need to focus on there here and now.

I echo those sentiments, brother. United, Chelsea and City will not be bed this bad collectively again for many years, is my guess. We must spend the cash to win this year.

and thats the assumption we need to work with and we absolutely must get someone in of quality if we're serious about winning something this season. JD looked quite tired in the last game and if he were to get injured we're screwed.

A real shame that Vermy's out for so long, with JD's impressive form it would have been great to see both of them as a central pairing.
