Yeah, I think the clause is to guarantee him playing time too.
Real Madrid will probably be hit with a transfer ban in the summer of 2016, similar to the one Barca have right now. It's no good for De Gea to be able to walk for free at that point, and it would be of no use to United either. A release clause is a good compromise: it guarantees that he's available for a fixed fee, and because De Gea committed to the club van Gaal can pick him again without losing any face. The clause will probably be active in January and that's when Real move for him.
