Jose Mourinho has radically downgraded the duties of Chelsea first team doctor Eva Carneiro, including her removal from the bench on matchday, just three days after his trenchant criticism of her and head physiotherapist Jon Fearne.

The 41-year-old doctor, of Spanish and British parentage, will continue to be the team’s first team doctor but will only work from the club’s Cobham training base. She will not travel with the team to games, home or away, nor will she attend training sessions outside on the first team pitch at Cobham.

Today, Chelsea refused to comment on her specific situation. A spokesman for the club said: “We don’t comment on internal staffing matters.”

I don’t think you can (defend what Mourinho did) and I’m not sure I want to. If you take it back a few steps, it starts with Eden Hazard. He is going to be the most-fouled player in the Premier League and he goes down in a heap. It certainly looked like he was hurt, not just tired.

The medics have a close relationship with their players so they will have had his best interests at heart. That’s all they’re guilty of. But if he’s not injured then he shouldn’t go down at that stage of the game. Why is Jose not having a word in Hazard’s ear?

Managers will want their medics to be tactical and know the game but normally they have the full understanding and sympathy of the coaches. Player safety and health has to come first.

But Mourinho’s actions towards Eva Carneiro are indefensible. If something like this happens it ripples through the club. That ruthlessness affects people. The support staff will earn nothing like the money the players are on but by all accounts I’ve heard there is a real generosity between players and staff at Chelsea. But this kind of behaviour can deeply affect people and the mood at the club.

Jose has gone for a small target, an easy target, with Carneiro. I know Jon Fearn from my days at Reading and he is a top, genuine guy and as good as they come as a physio. He always did his job and got on with it without problems. So if you’re going to have a problem with somebody like Jon Fearn you’re going to have a problem with everyone on the planet.

But I feel the whole saga is all because of a nervousness at the club at the moment. And that’s brought about by his team. They just do not look as solid as last season.

I reckon Eva Caneiro is getting loads of sympathy and media attention because she's a woman in a heavily male dominated industry and she's attractive. Its also Jose Mourinho who we love to hate.

I don't agree with what he's done but if it was Pardew we'd just laugh.

Pardew is actually a poor example seeing as he has been vilified for less in his career. He gets into more shit than any other manager in the league

I agree this story wouldn't have received as much attention had it not been a woman at the centre. However, if rumours that he's demoted her because of her gender then that surely is a discrimination suit waiting to happen? I'm not that familiar with English labour law, but sacking/demoting someone like that is probably not on.

As an aside, I like the way Mourinho is basically saying that she should have understood that Hazard would be time-wasting, like that is what is supposed to happen at the end of matches.

Everything. He's been getting shit for years - including the time he called Pelligirini a cunt in the heat of the moment and that made headlines. Mourinho publicly attacking a physio on the hand is an order of magnitude above this.

In fact, you don't even have to look far, look at the stick Guaridola got for sacking his own physio and having a go at him. This happened four months ago. You're just the one who's closer to the Mourinho news and thinks it's an exceptional story

On the contrary, it doesn't get enough attention - he's sacking/demoting her for literally doing her job. Haven't followed this much more but what's the official explanation for getting rid of only her and not the head physio too? If anything he should have been the one in the line of fire, that is if this whole story wasn't all bullshit anyway.

Btw I'd love to see someone spin this as another brilliant Mourinho mind game, even the media couldn't make Mourinho come out of this looking like anything but the piece of shit he is.

Personally I thought it was pretty obvious from Jose's comment about how "Even if you are a kit man, doctor or secretary on the bench you have to understand the game," along with the subsequent ban on Carneiro (but not the male head physio) from matches, training sessions and even hotels where the rest of the team is staying, that he's just yet another misogynistic piece of shit who thinks a woman doesn't get the ebb and flow of a male sport.

Good on her for not putting up with that fucking man-child, and good on Abramovich for reportedly tightening the screws on Mourinho.

Mourinho can't help himself when things don't go his way and tends to throw anyone he can find under a bus. I mean, all managers behave like children when they lose but Mourinho goes that step further. Remember Anders Frisk? That was by far the worst thing Mourinho's ever done

i really hope they lose one or two more games. his meltdowns when he loses are great, and usually cause major tumult at the clubs he's coaching
