Kos was physically not at it his first season. Sorted that out and became a totally different level.

Anyway Mustafi has some qualities but we've given him long enough to iron out the silly mistakes and he hasn't done it so its time to cut our losses with him.

I agree he must go. But I would genuinely like to know what's wrong. The curious case of Shkodran.

Focus and decision making are the hardest part for a centre half. He just doesn't have it at the very tip top level.

He is just not a smart footballer. Koscielny even at this age is miles better than Mustafi at his peak. That's the difference.

Kos has gotten smarter, he used to be a pretty dumb defender but he had way more speed to make up for it than Mustafi does.

He still has his brain farts before his injury as seen H v Atletico last season for Griezeman's goal.

He was still partly injured then though. Kos had been playing with his Achilles injury for 2 years.

Trying to clear the ball by kicking it back over your head is plain dumb and is indicative of AW's doctrine to keep the ball 'alive' so as to be able to play football at any cost. The best thing to have done would have been the simplest thing to do in that circumstance = put the ball out to enable the defence to regroup, and I don't care if it is a throw-in or corner.
If he was playing with an injury then even more reason to keep it simple and to get it right.

His back was knackered at the time, he'd been subbed off with back spasms. In previous games.
To be fair to kos all the mega Italian defenders in the last 20 years have cleared the ball the same way.

Nothing wrong with clearing the ball in that way, just don't hit it against yourself. 499/500 it's cleared and no one has a thing to say about it.

However even if it comes off and it's cleared it does little more than that in terms of getting your defence in order, and even less so if you are supposedly a team that is based upon having possession of the ball. It's no different to just hoofing the ball long and hoping, and is a low % play more likely to allow the opposition to contest the ball and regain possession.

I recall reading a comment about Guardiola at Barca where if they were unable to play through the opposition in the final 3rd to create the quality scoring opportunity, they'd put the ball out for a goal kick so they could contest the ball and regain possession with the opposition defence exposed and vulnerable.

That said I was very pleased to see Kos keeping it simple today and he also looked very decisive/ determined in doing so.

It's a massive list. Potentially unrealistic when you consider that you need to factor in Cech, Ramsey and Lichsteiner.
I would want most of those guys off the books though in an ideal world.

other than chambers all of them are on my departure wishlist too. and i don't object to selling him because he's exactly the kind of mistake we've been making in the past where we hang on to these players too long and everyone figures out they're shit.

and emery isn't selling anyone.

I reckon everyone has those names on the list. We are losing Ramsey and Cech.
Then we have to get rid of the following :
Elneny
Leichsteiner
Mustafi
Mhikitarian
Jenkinson
Chambers

Question marks on Monreal , Ozil , Wellbeck.
Then we have Ospina and the likes of Asano and Bielik still on the books.

Even if we manage to shift those players we need to bring plenty in . Reiss Nelson is probably the only one we can promote to the first team squad.

We have don't have the funds to do a rebuild on that scale. So most likely we will be stuck with some of the players we need to ship out. Will take 2 more transfer windows to make things right.

Good list. Only one I'd keep is Chambers and I wouldn't be too upset if he goes along with the rest of those.

Chambers could be an option if we retain the back3, but doesn't appear to be good enough to play as part of a back4 - particularly after playing most of this season as DM = perhaps he could provide cover for Torreira as a utility defender?
