Me neither, but only because I detest Costa. I'd easily pay that, and more, for Benzema or Cavani though. Costa is in the same bracket as those, whereas Giroud is a step or two down.

Yeah. I can't actually believe there is a debate whether Costa is a better striker than Giroud. Mind boggling.

I agree that Giroud is not an elite forward like Lewadowski, Aguero, Benzema are.

But at the same time your opinion of Giroud is tempered slightly given that at one point in the recent past you wanted Welbeck to start ahead of him, therefore it's fair to say you haven't quite grown to appreciate his qualities either. Of course you're entitled to your opinion, but in this instance I think your are wrong in your assessment of Giroud.

This is a forum where on the basis of a 2-3 month patch you have people saying there would be a struggle to upgrade Giroud. He's scored 40 league goals in 3 years. It's nothing exceptional. Takes his average to about 13 a season.

Cavani and Benzema are very different cases. Benzema is a world class striker and playing as one, Cavani is someone who is world class if he can find the level he had at Napoli three years ago. Those who aren't too keen on signing Cavani do not share this opinion because Giroud is better than Cavani at his best, but because they're worried Cavani might not be that player anymore.

That has never been the debate I started, so that must be something you or someone else has started later. I said that Costa hasn't been much better than Giroud this season.

GM, I have given Giroud a lot of praise, and deservedly so, in the last 3 months or so. I have even gone as far as saying that we may even win a major trophy with Giroud at point, IF we get another top class wide forward in. Before Giroud returning after injury I was certainly giving us zero chance of winning one of the two big trophies with Giroud at point, and my stance was that we needed an upgrade there more than in any other position.

Having said that, Giroud has been pretty poor in the last 4 games. I fear his purple patch is over, and that what we have been accustomed to seeing from him in his previous years is what we will get for the rest of the season. Biggest worry, for me, isn't that he hasn't scored in a while, but that in his last 4 games he hardly gets himself into any goal scoring positions.

Quince, my only point, really, is that I think the assessment that many seem to have that a player like Coquelin is too much of a hindrance to our attacking play is wrong. Then, I made a comparison with Chelsea and how they ALWAYS have a defensive midfielder in the team, regardless of opposition. They are, after all, the team we need to better to become PL champions. In that comparison I said that we match up with them very well, apart from them having two top class players in their front three, whereas we have just the one, Alexis. Now, that only holds true if you assess Costa as a top class striker, and quite a bit better than what we have, Giroud. I do think Costa is miles better than Giroud, but you don't. I can live with that. I still hope sign either as Reus or a Cavani/Benzema this summer, because otherwise I don't think we have any chance at all of leapfrogging Chelsea.

Because if the only guys you want to discuss are Aguero, Benzema, Costa and Lewandowski, it would certainly be a major struggle and cost to get hold of anyone in their bracket.

Remember Welbeck was supposed to upgrade Giroud and he's turned out very poorly. Can't make the right runs, and doesn't finish well.

Getting in a player significantly better than Giroud, in his prime, will either be a lucky gamble or a £35m proposition.

I don't know how many people thought Welbeck was going to be better than Giroud since his scoring record was atrocious and still is. That said I was still surprised by how poor some of his skills are. Giroud's scored about 40 league goals since he came. Even cccounting for a 2-3 month absence which probably a lot of strikers also go through that's a pretty average record.

People say he's a good link-up player and all?

In fact there is a pretty good chance a player who's much maligned here for his supposed lack of contribution besides goals but has been found to be assisting to the point of having over 50 assists in the last 6-7 years and superior to key passes and chances created on top of scoring goals is available this summer- Gonzalo Higuain

Higuain beats him on per 90 minute metrics too and that too over a much longer period. So he has a better ratio for those two statistics per 90 having played more than 50 percent more of Giroud's minutes. Benteke's are slightly less per 90 but considering the absolute dross that he plays with is not surprising but quite impressive.
