Normally I'm good with these. You're/your, then/than, etc. At least I can excuse myself with the fact that English is my 3rd language, so if thier/their is all you have, then I'm all good(and no Rexy, this isn't an invitation for further investigation regarding my top notch spelling).. :saint:

Isn't that just an exaggeration done on purpose? I don't think using the word like that was ever wrong. It works precisely because of the restrictive nature of the meaning of the word.

"In his youth, Michael Owen was figuratively a greyhound."

That sentence has the same meaning but it's a lot more square. Saying something is literally something which it clearly is not is actually a figure of speech. The meaning of the word doesn't change.

It has been wrong. People have been using it as an exaggeration, but that was never the meaning of the word. Now, since people have used it wrong for a long time, they've changed the entire meaning of the word.
