Welbeck's being played as a WF based upon work rate, and previously as CF in a system that's set up for Giroud.
IMO the ENG set up suits him better than at club level.

He does better for England the same way David Healy scored a load of goals for Northern Ireland. International football is mostly piss poor.

Burnsy, I don't think Giroud is shit. I just don't think he is good enough, and I don't see how he will ever be. Despite his improvements in the last 2 years I still don't think he is good enough.

Fair enough, but the point stands, Giroud isn't good enough and never will be … but he's still better than Welbeck in nearly every facet of the game. And therein lies the rub.

Good enough for us to win either the PL or the CL of course. Put Agüero or Costa in our squad and I'd say we would have a chance to win either.

Burnsy, I think we play in a way nowadays which is very well suited to Giroud, even when Giroud isn't playing. If Wenger, or any other manager, committed to another type of striker I reckon we would change our approach too. I agree with you that Giroud has performed a lot better than Welbeck since he came back from injury, in a system which plays to his strengths, but I really don't think there is too much in it quality wise between the two.

Ofty, I think Welbeck can turn into a reliable 20+ goals a season striker for us, with good coaching and opportunities to lead the line, but I just can't ever see Giroud get to that level.

Giroud's scoring at that pace right now once you take his layoff into account.

That's the issue I see, that for all his notable limitations Giroud's already about as effective as Welbeck's ever likely to be. I don't really buy the argument about setup either, but I hope to be proven wrong.

I don't think either can. Welbeck has the physical characteristics but I was shocked to see just how poor he's technically and in reading the game. Maybe 3-4 years of very effective coaching and him getting game time as a project up-front could see him become an efficient striker but I am done with project forwards. Spunk the money and bring in a world class forward because as on individual addition they win you games more than anything else.

@[deleted] - I assume you mean 20 league goals, if so he wasn't too far off it last season and he's going at a good pace this season, I think it was 10 in 12 starts.

Welbeck could develop to reach that target but it's all 'in theory' at the moment, in the mean time Giroud is already getting close to those figures so it's difficult to justify favouring for the former based on goal scoring. Danny needs to wait for his chance and grab it when he gets it. He was far too timid when he had the chance earlier this season.

You are extremely optimistic on Welbeck given what he's shown here. Its become pretty obvious why Welbeck spent most of his United career out wide. Fergie realised Welbeck needs that space and Wenger has now seemingly realised the same. His movement and his touch and close control in tight areas just aren't good enough to be a premier league striker.

Its ironic that you call Giroud Eeyore when he's a far more talented footballer than Welbeck. He's just slower. That is literally the only area where he is weaker than Welbeck.
