i sorta disagree Tone.. i feel after his injury, he came back a different player. a bit more beefed up, a bit more rugged and able to actually last an entire game while more consistently providing quality

With a prolonged period without injury Ozil will show exactly why we paid so much for him. He was playing very well towards the end of last season but there's definitely a lot more to come from him. I still think having the right players on the team with him is very important to getting the best out of him - more Walcott for example.

I really hope so. I was one of his strongest critics in the earlier days, even though I knew he was still getting used to the league and his teammates. He just didn't seem fully focused, and his influence on games was insufficient and inconsistent for a player of his calibre.

Right now he is playing and influencing our games like the elite footballer he is supposed to be, and I'm glad for it.

If he can avoid injury, we'll be in bizness come the tail end of the season.

Understandable.
It is probably personal to me as i first noticed him when he destroyed England in 2010

Meaning, unlike Coquelin, i am not shocked by his quality.

I agree. It's fair to expect more from Ozil but at the same time it was pretty obvious that he's a different class to everyone around him, even when he's at 70% of his ability, because there was a noticeable drop in results and the way we attacked when he wasn't in the team. Our play becomes more predictable and we really have to force the ball through the lines to create space when he's not around

Agree with both. The main difference right now is that he has more running power and stands up better in challenges. It makes him more aesthetically pleasing to watch and gives him a couple more opportunities to find passing angles and show off his ridiculous dribbling skills.

His effectiveness has been on pretty much the same level throughout though. Özil got a lot of criticism in his first season, but he played the same type of passes and backheel flicks that he does now. There's extensive video proof of this from practically every game we played in 13/14. It's similarly easy to find stats to back up the point that he had a significant impact on our attacking game. He created like 130 chances for us that season. When was the last time any player did that?

What's clicking right now is the small things. He's the most talented player in Premier League by some distance in my opinion. Maybe we'll have a team that brings out his full ability soon.

Mesut created 3.39 chances per 90 minutes last season, and that includes his rather disastrous post-WC start to the season out on the left. That's the best in the world as far as I can tell, next highest total I can find is Silva with 3.17. His dribbling, off-the-ball movement, and control of the pace of the game are amazing too.

Ozil had a really bad spell right before his injury in his first season here. It wasn't a long spell but it was very poor. I think sometimes people fail to differentiate that with the football he played before that. They're 2 very distinct periods IMO.

Again at the start of last season he was pretty poor when Wenger moved him out to the left. Where as when he came back into the team and played in his natural position he was much better.

Ozil is a very particular sort of player and I don't think he's someone who Wenger can move around the way he likes to with the rest of our attackers. Ozil is every bit the specialist that Giroud and Coquelin are and as such should always be played in his best position. If we do that consistently next season he can absolutely destroy PL and CL defences. Wenger just needs to let him.

I do not agree with the idea that he has not reached the heights as a player at RM.

If anything, coming to a new league and adapting to a new system exposed his limitations as a player. The media and pundits' witch hunt of Arsenal players hadn't helped either. I don't even need to reiterate the difference between the criticisms levelled at him compared to players like di Maria.

I'm just glad that he took up the challenge and did not hide despite all that. He is now indispensable to the way we play and the recognition will come in due time when we win more titles. He won't be what Messi and Ronaldo is to their respective teams, but he would be appreciated in the same way the likes of Xavi, Ribery, Iniesta etc. who are specialist players going by how it's defined. They are just indispensable to the way their respective teams play and when we have a title winning team it's not hard to look past him.

Funnily enough, I think he can go one gear higher by adding goals to his game.

We don't really need Ozil to play much better. Other players need to start taking the chances he gives them.

A lot of people don't care about who creates the most chances, they look at who gets the most assists. Put Ozil behind Costa and Aguero, and those numbers would match the ones he managed when playing with Ronaldo.

I really think assists are a much better measure than chance creation. Who decides what a chance is? What are the parameters?
