Ozil was voted player of the month for Feb on Arsenal.com so it's hardly a controversial view.

The only problem with Ozil are his performances in the big games. The root of the issue is that he plays centrally as part of a 3 man midfield, but he's not a midfielder. This means that the two players behind him are out numbered against teams who play with 3 proper midfielders. Ozil then goes missing because the two players behind him are unable to bring him into the game. This is why Ozil always fall short and will continue to fall short in big games, unless he's played out wide. It's always been the case with him.

His starting position should be much deeper in the big games. It was always infuriating seeing Real Madrid and ourselves persist with him high up the pitch in his usual position, when he was completely out of the game.

It's a bit of not having competent DM's and last season also that all our pacy attacking outlets were more or less injured.

Like I said before, Ozil did not start his career last season.

This is a simplified version of what happens. Ozil is a forward NOT a midfielder. Therefore, 1 forward + 2 midfielders vs 3 midfielders = Victory to 3 midfielders. Ozil is then consequently starved off the ball, hence the usual Ozil is AWOL claims, because his 2 midfield partners almost always lose to 3 midfielders.

Ozil is one-of-a-kind in today's game. There is literally nobody like him at the top level. He's an AM who plays nothing like an AM, he moves into every space except AM. That's what makes him so great, and what makes him such a weakness at the same time.

If we want to have Ozil at 10, it needs to be in a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-3-1-2, so we can maintain numbers in midfield. I think the later formation suits our squad better, but Ozil seems to be doing fine on the right at the moment.

Players like Coquelin were invented to account for players like Özil when the game moved away from second strikers and began to focus on playmaking AMs playing in the hole behind the striker instead. Norhing peculiar about it imo.

That's what we were playing last season. A 4-4-1-1. Ozil and Giroud upfront. Cazorla and Rosicky deep on the flanks.

This season we've got Welbeck and Sanchez on the flanks who play much further up, so it's become a 4-2-4 almost if Ozil is also central. That's why Wenger has shifted him to the flank, as well. To account for the new arrivals on the flanks who have changed the dynamic of the team.

Once again we showed how wasteful we are with chances. Ozil sets up plenty of chances, but we don't score as much as we should be doing.

Yep he's really starting to impose himself on games again. He's even upped his defending in the last couple of games. He'll be massive next season.

His desire is what impressed me the most. Still gets dispossessed regularly in 50-50s, but more than made up for it by winning it back most of the time.

Some of his interchanges and play was outstanding. Helped us so much especially when we tried to keep the lead because he kept seeing good passing options.

I still wish he saw the ball more or may be I am just greedy. He oozes class every time he gets on the ball.

Thought he was immense tonight and i am a big critic of his.

I was a bit worried seeing him in our middle three but his work rate today was immense, did not stop running and on the ball he was superb as well. I bet the vocal critics in the media won't mention this performance.

For our first goal think he should have been a bit more brave and tried to run at them and for the Sanchez miss he should have taken the shot. He really has it in him to score more, don't think he has the self belief.
