Don't think we could, Liverpool - as proven by this whole affair - are pretty nightmarish to do business with. I don't think it was a question of hitting an arbitrary number because we had already met the buy out clause. Whether it was embarrassing or not that we added an extra pound (incidentally another example of Liverpool releasing details to the media to suit their agenda) the fact is we should have been allowed to speak to Suarez that summer. They were quite happy to keep Suarez on and another 10m wouldn't have changed their minds either - and considering the difference in league position that he makes, could you argue with them?

It's not derisory to bid the buyout clause in a player's contract agreed upon by player and club alike. They wouldn't have sold for 50 million either. It's hard to understand how anyone could be duped by their ham-fisted PR attempts.

We were correct to bid the clause, Liverpool just ignored it and we didnt take them to court. Unbelievable how we let them get away with it.

I think this is an important point too. Liverpool released the figure because they tried to act insulted. We had in fact triggered a legal clause in Suarez's contract. None of that should have mattered.

I'd be interested to know how common this type of stuff is (maybe Speedy has some insight?) but it wouldn't surprise me if those type of bids were more frequent than people thought. Not even Daniel Levy will pay more than he's legally required to in order to sign a player.

Suarez would have had to take them to court, we didn't have any standing. The process would have taken months and he didn't want to do it (which LFC cynically counted on).
