Are there any working papers on the source of delusion in the Merseyside area? I'm actually serious, most fans and staff of football clubs in England and all over Europe are insufferable twats but the way Liverpool's lot are so completely out of touch borders on a scientific anomaly. I've never seen anything remotely like it elsewhere, there are other clubs too that were successful in the past and less so these days, but they've accepted their fate and adjusted their expectations. Do we have any Northerners here?

It's not so much a North-South thing but a rich-poor thing. Football is just more important to working class folks. It's all they have etc. that's how I was always into it. Liverpool are an especially emotional club but in some ways I respect their optimism/delusion. Their fans have always properly backed their club, in a way that's more than just chucking cash in tickets and the club shop.

Not sure I agree, I wasn't talking about how important the club is to the fans but the Liverpudlian delusions of grandeur. Being dirt poor normally makes you gain some sense of perspective.

Agreed … but the powerfully emotional atmosphere around some of these clubs makes it even more repulsive and perverse when the cynics of the footballing world play up to it theatrically, kissing the badge, crying fake (or even fakely real) tears …

Indeed, absolute joke they even thought they had a chance when Sanchez clearly wanted to join us. That was what delayed our purchase and the sale to Suarez because they insisted initially. Laughable they actually think that they could have forced Barca & Sanchez to bow to their wishes.

Also they had given Suarez their word he could go and rumour has it a new clause was inserted into his contract. This time he was prepared to escalate things all the way in order to push the deal through. Also with him biting Chellini in the World cup it didn't make that much sense for Liverpool to refuse a £60m+ offer for him.

It's funny, because Liverpool don't have a big reputation in southern Europe at all. Maybe ten or fifteen years ago, but not now. No one in Sanchez's position will look at them and go: "I'd like to play for that club." This pulling power is something Arsenal never lost despite the barren years, and a lot of it has to do with the identity that Wenger has established at the club. Both Özil and Sanchez wanted to come here. They would never have gone to Liverpool under the same circumstances.
