To be fair, they've recouped almost all of the money they've spent with the Carroll and Shelvey sales. Furthermore, Reina might go and so can Suarez and Skrtel.
I don't think, their owners are taking the new stadium thing seriously. It is a HUGE commitment and most owners/chairmen don't want to get into it, in the short term, and merely indulge in lip-service about stadium. (Speaks a lot about the wonderful job we've done with our completely self-financed stadium)

I don't know if those figures are completely right but going by that they've had a net spend of £75mill in the previous two seasons, go back another two seasons and they have managed -£5mill & -£8.5mill (they spent heavily in those two seasons but recouped a bit more than their expenditure). This season only bought in about £8mill so far, that is a hell of a lot money pumped into transfers and they don't have much to show for it so far.
They problem they are gonna have is the Premier league are about on bring in restrictions as are UEFA so their spending might need to be cut down. What Liverpool do well in though is good sponsorship deals as they have a huge fanbase, still as far as I know they run at a loss. Like you say speaks volumes about us and how we managed to fund a £400mill project, crippled our commercial income for a good few years but we are nearly through that now.
