That's what it sounds like to me too: throwing Martinez a few starts to make sure he stays and then it's back to competition for the shirt.
Leno said the club confirmed to him that he was the first choice keeper, and I don't think he lied about that, nor do I think they lied to him. I think Martinez's instincts were correct in this case, and since he had expressed that he didn't want to spend a season fighting it out with Leno he was right to leave.
