Chamberlain is not a defensive player though.

Chambers is better than Flamini in that position was what Otf meant, hence it's pointless to keep Flamini even as a squad option.

Chambers is not a 'dream' either, for a start he's already played there this season, Wenger has also said he's an option for that position. His passing is actually solid and so is his technique, and he's no Coq mobility wise but he's several notches better than the two pensioners.

Think there is still a serious need to ship out Flamini for a top defensive midfielder to compete with Coquelin, who is honestly yet to prove himself (meaning lasting the whole season). The one playing for Southampton will do the job.

Then it depends on who will leave but offensively (assuming Wenger won't go for Cavani who is a bit shit anyway) we are pretty much sorted.

Indeed, we need to continue what we've been doing over the past two summers. The squad's in the best state it has been in years, but it's still not good enough to beat Chesea - who in turn are a fair distance from the European elite.

IIRC AW said that Chambers started playing as DM/CMD (before he was used at CB for ENG at age group, then RB at Saints), and that he sees Chambers as eventually settling back in midfield.
IMO if we sign another CB then I suspect that chambers will be converted back into DM sooner rather than later as cover to Coquelin, and Bielik will be our 3rd/development option.

We don't need a passing type DM in an inverted 3 man midfield as in the 4141, but more so if we revert to a pyramid style as in the 4231.

Regardless of formation we need a player like that. We only have Coquelin and an aging Arteta, and we need one more. All in my opinion of course.

This is where Cazorla has come into it of late as a roaming playmaker type from CM & dropping deep to provide a passing option in support of Coquelin = balance of roles and function.

Arty's on his last legs and Flams definitely past it, so we definitely need another DM unless Bielik suddenly becomes 1st team material.

Chambers has started 2 dozen games in all comps this season starting aged 19.
If AW thinks he's good enough (and for 16m it appears he does), then he'll be part of the team to get playing time to develop.
As it stands IMO there is no 'need' to replace Coquelin with a DLP type.

You're only as good as your last game and he just scored in his.
But having said that we should keep playing our Coq so long as he's up to performing every time.
