You mentioned probably the best examples (although all of them were quite expensive), however it's very easy to burn money this way as well: M'Vila, Carvahlo, Balotelli, Quagliarella, Gourcuff, Lamela, Zaha, etc. All of them looked very very promising at times and cost quite some money, however right now their level is much lower than expected.
