Over the balance of plays in the 2 leg, Schalke is actually miles better. Dominated the entire game and should have had the tie wrapped up by half time. At home they were punished by 2 sucker punch, otherwise an even game.

he plays off the ball more these days. he probably could be more involved if he wanted, but real have plenty of distributors and ball carriers and he can just act as the tip of the spear

Those assists were simple cutbacks, with his pace playing up front and Real's amazing attack(even discounting him), they aren't much worth. He could've had many more if he wasn't so selfish, and actually enjoyed assisting.

Messi's assists on the other hand, those are worth mentioning. :drool:

Schalke are an absolute shithouse of a club but their youth setup is something else. At least one from the current generation of Meyer, Goretzka, Draxler, Ayhan and now this Sané lad seem to be destined to make it to the top I'd say. Their last batch of youngsters by the way included the likes of Matip, Höwedes, Rakitic and a certain Özil.

I'd like to see us a bit more aggressive in that respect, instead of paying 50m for the next Özil or Alexis just tap up the coaches at Schalke or Lyon and throw a couple million at them.

I agree. Messi is, of course, a much better player. But a "[font=Source Sans Pro]poacher that offers virtually nothing else[/font]" does not become the leading assister, simple cutbacks or not.

Yeah, been what Chelsea is doing. We need to match them at that aspect, sign them and loan them back to Schalke. If it doesn't work out, sell them for a profit.

Meyer was outstanding today, Goretza looks like a superb pivot. Very intelligent.

It was in regard to if he only was a poacher. I'd say so, despite those assists.

Re. your point, it depends, I'd say. Getting simple assists shows also the quality of Real, and thier counter attacking style.

Tbh, it's maybe just my slowly growing hatred for assists, and its meaning affecting my view. People assume a player with many assists is automatically some sort of playmaking God... It couldn't be further from the truth. They could come from set pieces mainly, or crossing, cutbacks, etc.

This is why Mata was found out at United, and that joker Eriksen will be if a big club pays stupid money for such an average player. The other day I read that De Bryune has been up there with Messi as one of the best playmakers in the world this season, and I couldn't believe my eyes reading it... He has been class but, saying De Bryune is up there with Messi is simply down to looking at those 15 assists, and assuming; "wow, what a playmaker". If, anything he's more of a final ball/crosding specialist and nothing what I would call a playmaker.

Watched the Real Madrid game when I got in from work; can't believe how shocking they were. No chance they win the Champions League again unless something dramatic changes. They were an embarrassment last night.
