The main difference between the Bayern we see today and Heyncke's Bayern, is that they were never bothered by giving the ball away, and they were more solid defensively. By that I mean that they would very often play the long ball from defense either diagonal to Robben/Ribery, or down the middle to Mandzukic. Then, they would outrun their opposite numbers and create chances and score goals. Of course, when you play that ball it will be unsuccessful a lot of the time, but that didn't stop them from playing it since the reward was so high. Guardiola has pretty much taken that aspect of the game out. As a consequence of attacking with as many players as they do now, they are a lot more open for counter attacks.
