Ok, you are correct. He is a sidegrade - different player, overall quality should stay the same.

But seriously though, please not turn this into a Sagna vs Debuchy debate. If you think he is a downgrade then fine.

Chambers is not going to start next season so he's a bit irrelevant in this context. He's an upgrade on a player who barely featured last season.

Let's say our first XI is:
Szczesny
Debuchy - Kos - Mertesacker - Gibbs
Arteta - Ramsey
Walcott - Özil - Cazorla
Sanchez

Giroud, Chamberlain, Podolski, Flamini and Wilshere (backups) will all probably get a fair share of matches. Why won't Chambers? Last season we had injury problems at left back, midfield and our wide players. This time it can be right back. Don't see why our backup there is more irrelevant than the others.

He might play, but he's still a backup. We upgraded the wrong rightback if we were looking for positional improvement.

Not a downgrade either. Some would argue he fits our style more as well.

Think Chambers is that CB replacement, and I think Vermaelen out is a certainty.

Chambers is the versatile player Wenger wants, the Sagna if you will, can play right back and also in the center of defence.

I think Vermaelen will leave and Wenger will bring in a CB.

Either way can't expect Chambers to be the only backup for 3 people. If he's needed at RB ur can't cover CB and vice versa. If Verm leaves we absolutely have to buy a competent CB (probably even if he stays).

Wenger says he will replace Vermaelen if he leaves because he is an important player. Chambers will be our 2nd RB/4th choice CB.
