Why would you pay a player who sits on the bench the same as a starter?
To make him come and sit on the bench, obviously.
Players care about two things: playing time and money. If you can't guarantee the former straight away you need to give them an incentive. Show them that you rate them on pair with current starters. If Höwedes is good enough to start he will get plenty of chances to prove it. Have you even seen our squad? The season started two days ago and we're already bleeding in three positions.
That is a bit of a false argument as we are only missing players we gave a huge rest to after the world cup. Howedes isn't going to come here and we are not going to pay £15m plus wages for a guy who is an insurance policy. How is a bench CB going to get loads of chances to show his talent? You never rotate CBs if you can avoid it so he is going to wait for an injury to one or the other. Better to get someone who can develop and won't cost the earth.
As I said, I doubt you would want a player who was motivated to come to arsenal solely because we are going to front him £90k a week BECAUSE he is going to sit most games out.
